6 Problematic Things that Nigerian Men Have Been Raised to Believe

6 Problematic Things that Nigerian Men Have Been Raised to Believe

By

There is the ‘educated’ notion that a man cannot really be defined by his place of origin, rather his behavior patterns stem from his personality and beliefs. Men who originate from Nigeria (Nigerian men), however, have unanimously defied this premise, as they are popular around the world… for certain characteristics now attributed solely to them.
Of course, there is the good and the bad.
The Good: They are generous (always willing to spend money); they are intelligent, innovative and excellent in business, as well as with their jobs. They tend to dominate whatever environment they find themselves in and take charge when needed. They are also reportedly good in bed.
The Bad: They are con artists, heartbreakers, deceitful, mean–hearted, not to be trusted, uber-cocky, carelessness spend money on random women and frivolities, and are just unnecessarily randy.
While this is normal, every human has good and bad qualities, there is a chance these Nigerian men only have these traits, as a result of the way they are raised.
It is no secret that the Nigerian society is patriarchal; as such, the men are not only granted unfair advantages upon birth, they are also raised to believe certain notions that can be harmful. This eventually creates problems for not just the men, but the society and world in general.
Here are a few problematic things Nigerian men may have been raised to believe:
Monogamy is a Myth
The Nigerian man grows up watching his father cheat on his mom, while his mom cheerfully looks the other way. He sees his brothers sneak different girls into the house, and other male figures getting away with randy behaviours. He then grows up with the mindset that monogamy is the last thing he feels he owes a woman. He only feels complete when he cheats on the women he is dating, or in a relationship with.
Even if he is in love with her he still keeps side chics or even baby mamas. He is hardly bothered that the female feels hurt, used, and uncared for. He expects women to accept it as a reality of life, because he believes monogamy is a myth.
It is essential that he realizes that monogamy actually is practical and can be achieved. It is weak of a man to hide under the assumption that monogamy is a myth. Monogamy and fidelity are actually attainable traits; you just have to discipline yourself enough to pull through.
He Cannot Cry or Show Emotion
“Boys don’t cry”
Nigerian mothers and fathers ram that into the heads of their sons from a very young age. They are discouraged from sharing their feelings with one another or from having feelings at all for that matter, right from a tender age. Feelings would make them a ‘sissy’ and less of a man. Raised with this mentality, they bottle up their emotions and learn to only express them via anger or mean spirited acts. They become heard-hearted, lacking empathy. And worse, since they believe the female is the one who can have emotions, they believe that the female owes them some kind of free, maternalistic, emotional labor.
The truth, however, is that the Nigerian male, just like the female has tear ducts. He can actually produce tears if he tried. He has hormones as well and can fell things just as the female. It is okay for him to cry, to feel jealous, crave a massage, scream in fear…e.t.c All these do not make him any less of a man. It only makes him human.
He Has to Preserve the Family Name and Bring Home the Bacon
Nigerian men are raised with the belief that they will eventually be the breadwinner of their own families. They will have to go to work, make money and provide for themselves, their wives, children, and even extended family members who cannot help themselves. He is supposed to earn more than his wife, and upon marriage, the wife will have to take on his surname and bear him sons, that will pass on the family name. She will be humble and be the neck, while he remains the head.
This mentality is fostered by tradition, culture, and religion, but it is not necessarily the truth of his existence. This belief puts a lot of pressure on him and also sets him up such that he has expectations that may not even be realistic. These expectations cause problems in his marriage or lead to depression.
No, a man does not have to be the bread-winner; his wife can take up the role, if she earns more and has better work ethics. No, the wife must not take on his surname, unless she wishes to. And no, he does not have to pass on the family name. the same family name will probably not exist in the next 1000 years, so why all the pressure?

He Is More Intelligent Than the Woman And Women Are Not As Important As Other Men
“Why would you let a girl get a higher mark than you?”  “How can you be here and your sister is answering all the questions?”
Right from a tender age, it is ingrained in his mind that being a male means he is the more intelligent sex. He grows up with an almost strong disregard for women. If he goes to see a doctor and it’s a female, he will request a male; if a woman in an Uber pulls up to pick him up, he will cancel the trip because “he cannot come and go and die”. If a woman does better than him socially or professionally, he feels terrible. Sexually, he likes to control women and gives little or no attention to their sexual pleasure: he doesn’t bother with foreplay and only likes oral sex as a recipient. He is different with men though. He will be late for appointments and dates with women, but be quite punctual with men. He may suddenly disappear from a relationship without ending it, but will fight to resolve relationship with his bro; he makes a promise to another man, he will keep it, but with a woman, he won’t be bothered. Even when he is in a relationship or married, he will talk endlessly to her about their lives, even ask for her opinion, but as soon as the conversation wraps up, god forbid she starts talking about her hard day at work! His eyes glaze over with boredom, and suddenly he realizes that he cannot stand gossip. Unfortunately, being a male does not mean you are the more intelligent sex. Both man and women are born equal.
He Should Be Able to Get Away With Anything
“Leave him, he is a boy”, “boys will be boys”
These comments suggest that being male in Nigeria means you can get away with just about anything. The gender socialization in patriarchal contexts prime men, not just take on positions of power, but also to believe that they are almost invincible. He is raised to feel a sense of ownership and entitlement over almost everything. An average Nigerian man does not understand why a girl would say ‘no’ to him and live happily ever after; why a company would deny him a job if nepotism is not involved; or why he should have to control his consumption of alcohol. He believes that he should be able to wield a certain amount of authority and power over every situation; otherwise, it is perceived as a mark against his masculinity.
The truth is, being a man does not absolve you from certain responsibilities. You remain accountable for your actions despite your sex.

Pride is Paramount
The average Nigerian man is cocky, controlling, and self-centered. This is probably because he is raised to believe that he is not a man if he does not have pride. To maintain this pride, he pretends to be what he is not, and engages in dubious activities… just to put up the expected façade. During a conversation, they won’t know anything about it, but they will give their own opinion and try to even force it down your throat. They will go bankrupt purchasing an item just to prove a point, or even sell his house to earn a title. It is great to have a measure of pride in oneself, but at what cost?
So think about it slowly and carefully… progress comes when you’re able to unlearn and relearn things in life. Don’t be stuck in the rut. The world is moving forward, and so should you.

Charles Nwolisa: There’s No Prize for ‘Managing’ an Abusive Spouse

Charles Nwolisa: There’s No Prize for ‘Managing’ an Abusive Spouse

“That man must be a very stupid man”. She said fuming.
“But mum, he is dead. Let him just be dead, not stupid too”, I retorted.
“Anyone jarey, he is stupid for not leaving that witch, you see how she has killed him”, she replied while checking the beans on fire.
Seated in the parlor with one of the dailies and a rechargeable fan blowing in my face after burying a plate of yam pepper soup with chicken, I couldn’t help but wonder if she was actually right.
Perusing through the pages of the paper, the story of Maryam Sanda, a nursing mother who killed her husband in his sleep, could easily jump out and smack you in the face.
“Just imagine. How would that young man’s mother be feeling now? See eeeh, no woman in the name of wife will kill any of my children”, my mum continued.
What would make a pregnant woman stab her husband in the chest and neck while he slept, because she suspected him of indefinitely?
My mum’s anger wasn’t targeted at who should have been bearing the brunt of her vexation: the killer. It was focused on the man.
Her point is that he knew she was prone to violent anger outbursts, but still stayed.
Part of the article read, “According to close friends of the victim, the two-year-old marriage had been fraught with problems as a result of Sanda’s violent tendencies and hot temperament. Maryam had attacked Bilyamin before the latest incident, which unfortunately led to his death”.
It was after reading this part to my mum that her outbursts gained steam and she was right.
She was enraged and rightly so, but as African mothers have a knack for doing, ended up telling me a familiar story with happier endings.
In her words, “I remember the story of a young man, this happened a few years back. He was just three months into the marriage and was having an argument with his new wife when she stood up, entered the kitchen and grabbed a knife. Shocked, is to put it lightly. He left the house immediately. When she was calm, she called him but he was not having it. He didn’t come back home. A few days later, when he was sure she would be at work, he came with his brothers, packed everything that belonged to the woman including the wedding gift items to her parent’s house and dumped them in front of the house, began divorce proceedings and traveled abroad. Pleas from friends, families, relatives and even enemies to take her back met a brick wall. He loved his life more than marriage and rightly so”.
You need to have seen my mum telling the story with her village woman-educated woman mixture of Igbo and English and hilarious hand movements. Drama queen. But there is nothing funny about domestic violence. Spousal abuse is taking an upward trajectory and women are becoming major offenders, surprisingly.
Only last week, a wife stabbed her husband with a broken bottle in Zamfara State. The man is still alive but in a bad state, because the woman stabbed him several times and in different places. They had an argument and the next thing, she broke a bottle and charged at him.
Another incident in Owerri, where a wife bathed her husband with acid after accusing him of adultery. The woman had traced her 50-year-old hubby to a construction site where he was working before emptying the deadly liquid on him. He died.
How many men have endured abusive relationships but couldn’t voice it out because it would make them look weak. “How can an African man accuse his wife of beating him? He is not man enough”, they would say.
Love has made people stick to violent partners.
“Let me stay for the family” has made women stay with physically and emotionally abusive lovers.
“What will people say?” has led to more concealed bruises than even concealers can cover up.
“I pray for him. He will change” has led to more visits to the hospital to mend domestic injuries than to give birth.
Women are in abusive relationships and so are men.
No gender is violence-proof but whatever the case may be, never “manage” an abusive partner. I know you love love but love life more because, without life, you can’t love.

Embarrassing Travel Tales! The Time I Puked While Paragliding

Embarrassing Travel Tales! The Time I Puked While Paragliding

Yes, you read that right and no one warned me. I only found out it happens to a lot of people after it happened to me! All I’ve ever seen are beautiful photos of people up in the sky, throwing their hands and legs in the air. Kinda like this…

Paragliding looks and feels very exciting, till you start to feel woozy and throw up on yourself and your “pilot” TWICE!
This is for sure the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me in my years of travel. I mean I’ve missed my flight because I was chasing jollof rice in Gambia. I’ve also been chased by a stray dog in Seychelles, harassed on the streets of Marrakech because my outfit was “inappropriate”, but nothing on earth prepared me for this.
The truth is this information is online, right there in your face, but you are not looking for it. You are more than likely to search “will I die during paragliding” or “is paragliding scary” and not “possibility of puking while paragliding”.
So let’s get to the story! I found myself at a medical tourism conference in Pamukkale, Turkey and I decided to paraglide while there.
Paragliding has been a bucket list item for me for many years. I used to be afraid of heights but after conquering my fear with a few adrenaline-pumping activities like zip lining and para sailing, I knew I was ready to paraglide.
I couldn’t pass up on this opportunity to paraglide across the Pammukale travertines.  Dr. Dayo, the medical tourism practitioner I attended the conference with, had told me about his session and had only great things to say about it.
“It’s only scary when you jump off the mountain/cliff. After that, it just feels like you are floating in the air”
Floating in the air huh? Count me all the way in! I want some of that.
Immediately, I booked my session on the last day of the conference. The Turkish Healthcare Travel Council sponsored my entire trip, so coughing out $150 for this activity was not a problem!
“Ma’am paraglide $120 without photo. $150 with photo and video”- the instructor said over the phone.
“I’ll take the photo and video option. I need to capture all these epic moments”- I said.
The moments were indeed epic!
The company, around 9.00am, picked me up from my hotel. I can’t even begin to explain the rush and excitement running through my veins. I was documenting every step off the way.
Not only was I about to paraglide, I was paragliding across the Pamukkale travertines. I had visited the beautiful milky white calcium pools two days prior, so it felt good that I got to view it from another perspective! Like they say, the view is much better at the top.
The Pamukkale travertines is one of Turkey’s most prized possessions. They are natural calcium deposits and you can read all about the science behind it here
We picked up fellow paragliders along the way and drove up the mountain for take off! Everyone in the van was so excited; some on their third paragliding experience. I wondered why anyone would do this more than once. The feeling must be amazing!
As we got to the top, we were asked to change to the shoes they had provided. I was lucky; I had appropriate shoes on so I did not need to put my feet in some stinky shoes thousand’s of people might have worn.
NOMAD TIP: The ideal shoes for paragliding are definitely sneakers, espadrilles, plimsolls or anything that will not fall off your feet while gliding. Sandals are a no no!
We took turns for take off and when it was time for me to go, I could feel my heart in my mouth. I got strapped to the pilot and tried to get instructions from a Turk that could barely speak English. “No sit….No sit”- he said to me, gesticulating that I should not sit on the harness until take off. He then handed me the go pro and walked me briskly down the hill. The pilot on the other hand was behind me getting the parachute ready for take off.
A few steps later, we were up in the air and I heard “sit, sit”! It was time to sit on the harness and glide our way through the remarkably beautiful city of Pamukkale. Dr Dayo was right! It did feel like I was floating in the air. It was extremely magical and the world was literally at my feet.
I could see the ancient city of Heirapolis, the white calcium pamukkale pools and ants…well humans looking as tiny as ants. The view took my breath away. This is what bucket lists are made of (I said to myself). I was even teary eyed. Not because of emotions, but I cry when the wind gets in my eye.
It was all gravy until the pilot decided it was time to impress this African girl with his skills. He swayed to the left and swayed to the right making a “whoooshhhhh” sound. I was so ecstatic; I encouraged him to keep at it. Then I started to feel funny.
I ignored the first feeling of nausea and said to myself “There’s no way on earth I could possibly throw up at this very moment. This is literally one of the best moments of my ….” Before I could complete the sentence in my head, I BARFED! It was an uncontrollable one. I could not hold it in. I could not swallow it up. It came all OUT!
You really done want to know where it landed. But think about throwing water when you are up in the air. It goes nowhere. Hahaha.
While still trying to recover and apologize to the pilot for the first episode, the second one came right OUT! I wanted to die, literally. If the clouds could swallow people up, that very moment would have been perfect. Strangely, the pilot kept apologizing to me and asking me if I was okay (the best way he knew how, lol). I just wanted to land at that point!
He took me down and my fellow paragliders saw the entire episode. How on earth did they see it? I wanted to crawl into a cave and just stay there. It was so embarrassing. After paying for my flight and getting my photos/videos, I took a cab straight to the hotel, washed off the entire gross-ness and called my hot air balloon pilot! I was scheduled to go hot air ballooning in a couple of days and I needed to be sure I was not going to throw up there too! He assured me the flights were totally different ad hot air ballooning was way slower. After the call, I headed straight to Google!
Search words: “Barfing while Paragliding”
I was shocked to see this was actually a thing with tons of YouTube videos and articles. So so gross! People prone to motion sickness are more likely to feel queasy while paragliding. I never have motion sickness, so why did this happen to me?
When I narrated my episode to my friends some called it excitement, some called it fear, some even suggested it must have been the show-off by the pilot. Whatever it was, it was an anti-climax to an almost perfect day. My most embarrassing moment till date! However, everyone should try paragliding once in his or her lifetime! You just need to adequately prepare for potential queasiness.
NOMAD TIPS: Do not eat heavy before paragliding. This saved me from further embarrassment. All I had taken prior to my ride was water and I could not imagine throwing up my breakfast in the air.
Ensure you stay hydrated and well rested.
Try to have something with mint (candy or gum) while up in the air. Mint helps with motion sickness.
Try ginger too.
And finally do not encourage your pilot to show off his skills. Make the flight as basic as possible.

RENAISSANCE MAN YOUNG LEADS MAN UTD TO STATEMENT WIN

ASH, BANG, WALLOP - RENAISSANCE MAN YOUNG LEADS MAN UTD TO STATEMENT WIN

The wide man fired home two wonderful first-half strikes as Manchester United eventually saw off Watford to reduce the gap at the top to five points

Manchester United didn’t just need to keep up the pace at Watford on Tuesday, they needed to make a statement. And, thanks in large part to Ashley Young, they did exactly that in storming to a 4-2 win in the first of two huge tests on the road in the space of four days.

With Arsenal to come at the Emirates on Saturday, Jose Mourinho will have been looking for three points however they came at Vicarage Road, but a more convincing performance than the one which saw United edge past Brighton at the weekend was in order to persuade the wider world that they have what it takes to deal with a title race right through to May.
Manchester City’s huge lead has so far been built with something of a swagger, and a string of stumbling displays by their neighbours had only helped to accentuate the gap in quality.

VARDY AND MAHREZ STUNNERS INFLICT MORE AWAY-DAY WOE ON SPURS

LEICESTER CITY 2 TOTTENHAM 1: VARDY AND MAHREZ STUNNERS INFLICT MORE AWAY-DAY WOE ON SPURS

It was a performance reminiscent of 2015-16 for Leicester City, as Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez scored in a 2-1 win over Tottenham.
Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez scored stunning goals as Leicester City held firm against a late onslaught to inflict more away-day woes on Tottenham in a 2-1 victory.
In a performance largely reminiscent of their remarkable title-winning triumph of 2015-16, the Foxes clinched a first home league win over Spurs at the King Power Stadium.
The stars of the show were two men who were so influential in Leicester's title win, with Vardy setting the tone with a stunning, audacious lob on the stretch that would have made Lionel Messi proud.

The midfielder came off early in the second half with a leg injury and the Red Devils comfortably ahead
Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic was forced off early in the second half with what appeared to be a leg injury.
Ander Herrera replaced him in the 54th minute of the contest at Vicarage Road with the Red Devils up 3-0.
An injury that sidelined Matic for any period would come at an inopportune time, as United's next fixtures include matchups with Arsenal, CSKA Moscow in the Champions League and a derby with Premier League leaders Manchester City.
